The challenge of Osaka Enterprise to environmental business in Ethiopia

Osaka, Japan – January 15, 2018 - Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) adopted the project “Feasibility Survey for Promoting Import Substitution Industry through Advanced Recycling Technology” (Ethiopia), which was proposed by Fukunaga Engineering Co., Ltd. (Located in Jotoku, Osaka. Representative Director: Masahiro Fukunaga).

Ethiopia is the second-most populous nation on the African continent. In these years, it has become one of the fastest growing economies in the world with an average GDP over 10% per annual. Industrialization in Ethiopia lead to high demand for aluminum material and tire. However, due to the shortage of manufacturing technology and recycling technology, the demanded aluminum material and tire have been imported from other countries. The annual import quantity of aluminum material has increased by four times in past 5 years.

Mr. Fukunaga, representative director of Fukunaga Engineering Co. Ltd., has engaged on recycling business for the long time in Osaka. After visiting Ethiopia, seeing the recycling situation and meeting diligent Ethiopian there, he has considered to do the recycling business in Ethiopia base on his past experience.

Through JICA public-private partnership, Fukunaga Company got the cooperation from Ethiopian government to do the researching of recycling situation in Ethiopia, and according to the results of researching to create the business model afterwards.
It is expected that the recycling industries in Ethiopia could be revitalized by making a good use of aluminum recycling Know-how and the retreated tire technology from Fukunaga Engineering Co., Ltd.
